I just found out that I have two weeks to produce a beta version of a groupware application for a customer of my new employer. It would be three weeks, except that two weeks from Saturday I'm flying to Milwaukee for the aforementioned trip (see "Mecca"), so I pretty well screwed the pooch on scheduling.
Needless to say, my employers are freaking out a little bit about this deadline, and it's not helping them that I haven't yet told them that I've accepted their offer. They're really going to be tripping when I tell them about the whole Milwaukee trip.
I had forgotten really what the whole boiler room atmosphere was like (this kind of thing is pretty much how my entire career has been), and it's a bit jarring to go from being able to pretty much do whatever the hell I want (eg. sitting around the house in my underwear, watching TV) to working the insane hours that typified my old life.
It's not so much changing gears as it is dropping the clutch. I'm just wondering how much tire tread I'm going to lose on this one.
