You know how growing up, we had this stereotype of japanese movies? You know, abysmal plotlines, awful dialog, oversized monsters squishing short little people who are running screaming through the streets of Tokyo?

It turns out that the original version of Godzilla was actually a fairly well thought-out science fiction movie with a bit of actual social commentary... right up until they decided to ship it here and the geniuses involved cut most of the subplots and social commentary, spliced in some footage of Raymond Burr and had themselves a movie fit for an American audience.

I think I'd like to watch the re-edited release, but I don't think I'm going to make it to the Castro so I hope there's a DVD in the works.
