MusicWhat can I say about Johnny Cash that you don't already know?

I have a tremendous amount of respect for this man, and I mourn his passing.

MusicBleu (a.k.a. William James McAuley III) is perhaps the most well-known of the artists that I'll be reviewing, and having just talked to the man after his set was over, he's also the one most fresh in my mind.

I actually managed to see him perform on consecutive nights, with each having an entirely different feel. At the Boston Music Awards, he had a whole band and even a choir that, from what I can tell, was an ad hoc assemblage of some of Boston's less well known musicians. There he performed "Get Up", a catchy power pop song that you can't help but smile and get at least a head bob or toe tap going.

MusicSince JAV isn't playing out for another five whole days, here are some last minute tips for a couple of great shows this weekend.

If you're looking for something hard rocking, there's a band out of Chicago called A.D.D., and they're part of the lineup at Copperfield's downstairs. I chatted with these guys for a while, and not only do they appear to rock out on stage (gleaned from poking around their website), but they also seemed really cool to hang out with, and at least a couple of them are IT guys.

MusicIt's a strange thing, being back in the rock and roll business.

Even though I wasn't technically working the show, I fell right back into the rhythm that goes along with events like this. By that, I mean that quite possibly the least interesting thing going on tonight was the show itself.

MusicI just got back from the Just Another Victim show at the Kirkland.

The show went really well, all things considered. We spent about five solid minutes doing sound check after what felt like the world's fastest load in, and when the band started to play, it was, if I do say do myself, perfect.

Wil and Dave's guitars were balanced with each other and loud enough to be audible, if not quite crisp, over the massive percussion being generated by the Admiral, and Forrest's bass was making its presence known without being overbearing.

Then Dave broke a string.

MusicYou are all jealous of me right now. I got to sit in on a Just Another Victim rehearsal tonight, and I got to hear the set for this Sunday's show... twice.

There I was, sitting on a couch, a beer in my hand, having one of my favorite bands play what felt like a private concert for me. This is why I got into the music business (though, interestingly, one has nothing to do with the other at this point).
